Eye

Degenerative eye diseases are a major health problem of aging populations. One in four over the age of 60 is affected by some vision loss. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) have a severe impact on the quality of life for the elderly. Treatment with anti-VEGF-injections directly into the eye is limited to advanced stage of these diseases. The recommendations for early/intermediate stages are healthy lifestyle, smoking cessation, regular eye exams and - because no drug products are approved - dietary supplements based on the ARED-studies containing Zinc, vitamin C and E, and Lutein / Zeaxanthin.

A known risk factor for AMD, DR and glaucoma is an elevated Homocysteine-level (Hcy), an indicator of a nutrient deficiency. Altered microcirculation and a limited supply of micronutrients via the Blood-Retina-Barrier (BRB) are common causes for AMD, DR and glaucoma and are related to elevated Hcy-levels.
In a pilot-study it was possible to lower the Hcy-level to normal with a «Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP)» containing stable L-methylfolate and other micronutrients in a dosage based on current scientific facts. Recently, a pilot study documented a decrease in Retinal Venous Pressure (RVP) in glaucoma patients. It is known that RVP is elevated in patients with diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and age-related macular degeneration.

Two independent biomarkers confirm the efficient removal of the deficiencies with a careful selection of ingredients and its dosages. The lower Hcy-level is the biomarker of the correction of the systemic deficiency in the whole body and the RVP shows the effect directly in the affected organ, a rather unique and surprising result for a «Food»-product.
